Weleda, organic and natural cosmetic
History
In the years around 1920 three pioneers set about giving new form to the teaching and research activity on anthroposophical medicine which had existed for a number of years. In 1921 the doctor Ita Wegman (1876-1943) opened the Clinical and Therapeutic Institute in Arlesheim in Switzerland, a hospital using anthroposophical medicine for treating people who had fallen ill. The chemist Oskar Schmiedel (1887-1959), along with Dr. Wegman and Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), developed the first pharmaceutical products whose concept has formed the basis for Weleda's product philosophy to this day: the medicine should provide crucial stimuli for the body's own healing powers. This idea pre-empted what complementary medicine and its research know today: healing is brought about by holistically formulated pharmaceutical products that stimulate the body to heal itself. Steiner and Wegman had developed this medical approach in different lecture courses over previous years.

Weleda natural and organic cosmetic products are based on natural ingredients. The formulations and their main plant ingredients, such as iris, wild rose or pomegranate, have a holistic effect and are tailored to the body’s specific needs.We only use selected raw materials in the production of our care products, which are sourced from biodynamic cultivation or certified wild sources wherever possible. Where we are unable to source the ingredients from our own Weleda gardens, we work with selected suppliers – and in most cases, these are long term collaborations. We carefully monitor every step in production, from cultivation through to harvesting and processing. This ensures that you can have peace of mind when applying products grown in our gardens or under our supervision to your skin. And to your family’s skin.
Besides the raw materials, the formulas' quality also plays an important role. In contrast to mixing ingredients according to the traditional laws of chemistry, we take great care in ensuring that processing is gentle, as well as finding a formula that complements all the ingredients. On top of this, Weleda is continuously researching new plant-based raw materials, and we are constantly improving our products within each range.
NATRUE - Guarantee of quality
Weleda has contributed significantly to ensure the quality of our natural and organic cosmetic products by assisting in the creation of a rigorous independent certification scheme. The non-profit initiative "NATRUE" was founded in 2007 by Weleda and other pioneers of natural and organic cosmetics in Europe. It ensures that in future, natural and organic cosmetics will meet the highest standards and that consumers will able to find their way more easily among the growing number of products with natural and organic cosmetic standards.
